Catch a falling star, and put it in your pocket, never let it fade away.
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket, save it for a rainy day.
The song is timeless. Other things too - they just do not get old. Like star cut outs, winter cakes and the smell of winter spices in the kitchen.
Ingredients: 550 g flour, 300g honey, 100g sugar, 120g butter, 1 egg, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 60g gingerbread spice (for home-made version recipe, click here), coloured icing pensDirections: Heat the butter and the honey in a small pot to get that thick, sweet magma.
Place all other ingredients into a bowl and kneed the soft dough smooth while it is still warm (makes life a little easier).
Looks a bit clay-like, no? Roll out the dough with a pin on a flat, flour sprinkled surface.Sprinkle with a little more flour to stop sticking. Get cutting! If you do not have special cookie cutters, the rim of a glass should do the trick. Alternatively, you can play the carving game, with a sharp knife, although it may get a little messy once the dough cools and hardens.Set the over to 200 ˚C, and once hot, bake for 10 minutes.Knock yourself out with coloured icing designs.![]()
Gingerbread can “rippen” for weeks, allowing the richy rooty flavour to soak through the cookies and the tender softness to kick in. Save a box of your favourites…Save it for a rainy day.
